Biography:

Abu-Rabia, Aref has completed his Ph.D., in Social Anthropology at Tel Aviv University. Abu-Rabia is a full professor in anthropology and public health; Chair of the Department of Middle East Studies (2004-2006), University of the Negev at Beer-Sheva. Author of four books and numerous scholarly publications including on traditional medicine, family customs, holy saints, education, violence, abuse of children, cosmopolitan; alternative and complementary medicine.

Abstract:

The Arabs medicine in the Middle East was influenced by many cultures and civilizations, as a result of commerce and trade as well as political, military, religious, and intellectual; and was also influenced by Greece and Rome. The Greco-Roman system of medicine developed based primarily on the writing of Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Galen.

The sayings (hadith) of the Prophet Muhammad on health and illness were systemized and became known as Medicine of the Prophet, in addition to a number of physicians and traditional healers. One of the greatest and most well-known Islamic doctors was Ibn Sina, who compiled the Canon of Medicine. Another leading Arabic philosopher/physician was Rhazes, who compiled the Comprehensive Book on Medicine. The works of Ibn Sina and Rhazes were later translated into Latin, and continued to influence medical practice until as late as the nineteenth century. The Islamic hospitals provided patients with systematic treatments based upon humoral medicine. These included exercises, baths, dietary regimens, and a comprehensive materia medica, in addition to bone-setting, cauterizing, venesection, and eye surgery. The Arab medical tradition, established in the seventh century, was molded in the tenth century, developed in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, reached its peak in the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries, and later declined in the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.

This paper will examine several plants, analyze their properties and uses in the alternative medicine practices in the twenty-first century.

Mahreen’s research is to develop new strategies to identify the structure of virulence factors – usually proteins – present in MDR bacteria, which will help the development of new and more effective drugs to combat them. Medicines, often of poor quality in Pakistan , are frequently used excessively and are a major factor in an increase in multidrug resistance (MDR) in bacterial diseases - an issue that particularly impacts women. As a member of NAYS and Tanzeem-E-Khidmat-Khalaq Association, she participated in awareness campaigns on women education in different villages, so that they send their daughters /wives for higher education

Abstract:

Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is the result of bacterial infection of the liver parenchyma, with subsequent penetration by inflammatory cells and development of a collection of pus. Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is a serious, life hostile condition with a sky-scraping mortality rate. The objective of this study was to collect demographic data and clinical laboratory and microbiological distinctiveness of PLA patients and the assortment of the most capable and fiscal antibiotics. We studied 130 cases of pyogenic liver abscesses patients (clinical, laboratory, radiologic findings and the results of bacteriological studies), admitted to Khyber Teaching Hospital in KPK treated  between the time period of 2000-2012.  Data was analyzed by statistical package by excel 2010. Patient’s demographics reveal that male predominance over female (Male to female ratio 3:1) accounting 62.30%. 70% were under the age of 50 and shows that pyogenic liver abscess is indirectly proportional to the age that is, with the increase of age the described disease decreases. Escherichia coli were found to be the common organism involved in causing pyogenic liver abscess. Among 300 E. coli the rate of sensitivity were 100% to Norfloxacin and Enoxcin and 50% to gentamycin and Amikacin. We analyze and conclude that males more sensitive to Pyogenic liver abcess than female.

Abstract:

Medicinal and aromatic plants are often used as natural medicines because of their remedial properties. Product of plant origin, has become an exciting  area of research in drug discovery and development. Medicinal and aromatic plants are mainly exploited for essential oil extraction for many application in industries. This study aims to evaluate two extraction methods on essential oil percentage and components of celery and parsley seeds. Celery essential oil percentage gave insignificant effect according to the two used methods, meanwhile parsley essential oil percentage appeared significant values, the main components of the two plants were decreased with  extracted by evaporator, (limonene of celery and  Myristicin of parsley). Limonene was decreased from 71.32% with hydro distillation to 42.04% with evaporator hydro distillation, myristicin   was lower from 77.58% to 53.69% according to the previously methods. Monoterpene hydrocarbons were decreased in two plants with evaporator hydro distillation, but oxygenated compounds were increased and the decrease was very low in both two plants, meanwhile sesquiterpene hydrocarbons cleared decrease in celery and increase in parsley. According to previously, recommended by application the two methods (hydroditilation of water and evaporator )for essential oil extraction of both of celery and parsley seeds.

Abstract:

Introduction: To explore the effects of Shenzhi Jiannao prescription on clathrin-mediated endocytosis(CME)of NMDA receptors in Vascular Dementia (VD) rats, and rediscover the relationship between CME of NMDA receptors and VD. Methods: Vascular dementia model in rats was established by repeatedly clamping bilateral common carotid arteries and intraperitoneal injection of sodium nitroprusside. The rats were randomly divided into five groups: normal group, sham-operated group, model group, Shenzhi Jiannao group and Memantine Hydrochloride group. Behavioral tests of learning and memory ability were performed in each group after operation. HE staining and Nissl's staining were used to detect pathological changes. Western Blot and RT-PCR techniques were used to analyze the expression of Clathrin, NMDAR1 and Rab5b in hippocampal neurons of rats. Results: The learning and memory ability, the arrangement and morphology of neurons in hippocampal CA1 area and the expression of NMDA receptor in Shenzhi Jiannao group and Memantine Hydrochloride group were improved compared with model group. The expression of clathrin, Rab5b and cytoplasmic NMDAR1 were increased, while the expression of membrane NMDAR1 was decreased. Conclusion: The obstruction of CME of NMDA receptors leads to accumulation of excitotoxicity, which is one of the pathological mechanisms of VD. Shenzhi Jiannao Prescription can effectively improve the endocytosis process, reduce the toxicity of excitatory amino acids.

Chinyerum Opuwari is a married and a mother of three. She completed her PhD from the University of the Western Cape in 2013. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in Anatomy at the University of Limpopo. Her research interest lies in the use of indigenous traditional plants for the management of male infertility. She has published 5 papers in reputable journals and is actively involved in reviewing manuscripts for journals in her area of research.   
 

 

Abstract:

Aspalathus linearis, commonly referred to as rooibos, is indigenous to the Cederberg region in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It is usually produced as unfermented and fermented tea. Previous studies demonstrated improved sperm parameters such as concentration, motility and viability in male rats owing to its antioxidant property. This study aims to investigate the effects of unfermented and fermented rooibos in proven infertile men in vitro.

A total of 50 semen samples were collected after 3-5 days of abstinence from patients attending the infertility clinics of Tygerberg Hospital, Tygerberg, South Africa, and Vincent Palotti Hospital, Pinelands, South Africa, respectively. After liquefaction, semen was washed with HTF-BSA (1:5), centrifuged for 10 minutes at 500 xg and exposed to aqueous extract of unfermented (0, 0.15, 1.5, 15 and 150 μg/ml) and fermented rooibos (0, 0.10, 1, 10 and 100 μg/ml) for 1h at 37ºC. Thereafter, sperm parameters such as motility, vitality, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), ROS production, capacitation and acrosome reaction were analyzed.

Our results showed no effect of the extract at any of the concentrations used on the respective sperm parameters. In conclusion, both, fermented and unfermented rooibos has no direct effect on the human sperm in vitro. Hence, the positive effect that was seen in previous studies was rather due to the systemic antioxidant effect on the male reproductive system in vivo.

Abstract:

Waggle needling, emphasizing the effective combination of needling technique with joint movement, has long been applied for the management of spasticity in the time-honored traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and gained preferable clinical treatment effects. However, the mechanism underlying this classical anti-spastic needling technique still remains unclear. In the study, we compared the anti-spastic effect of waggle needling with the routine needling at Yanglingquan (GB 34) based on the rat model with post-stroke spasticity. The Zea Longa score and Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) were utilized to assess the neurological function and muscle tone, separately. Electrophysiological recorder was aimed at testifying the indirect muscle tension of rats in conjunction with MAS. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blot assay were applied to detect the levels and expressions of γ-amino butyric acid transaminase (GABAT) and γ-amino butyric acid (GABA). Following 7 days acupuncture treatment, the neurological function was improved and muscle tension was markedly decreased, meanwhile, the expression of GABAT was inhibited and GABA expression was enhanced in the cortical infarct regions of rats. Furthermore, rats in the waggle needling group performed better than those in the routine needling group. Our findings indicated that the attenuation of GABAT and enhancement of GABA might be the preferable anti-spastic effect of waggle needling for rats with post-stroke spasticity.

Abstract:

Lumbo-sacral angle (LS) it is a well establish reference on literature for biomechanical determination of lumbar spine alignment. Facet tropism is an embryologic and anatomic condition affecting spine joint facets biomechanics.  Variability on measurement (LS) could disturb articular congruency between joint facets.  Alterations of LS, has influence over proprioceptive responses, and provoke several physio-pathological progressive changes as: muscles contraction dysfunction, deformities or degenerative process at joints, disks, scoliosis or any other type of degenerative condition affecting facet joints range of motion. The purpose of this work is to evaluate biomechanical changes using LS measurements on subjects treated with chiropractic. A sample of 32 college students between ages 19 to 30, participated on the study.  A 68.8% (22) were females and 31.3% (males).  Radiographic (AP and lateral lumbo-pelvic X-rays) measurements of LS were made to all participants before and after being treated with chiropractic.  A 64.3% of the sample were identified with lumbar facet tropism.  A chiropractic treatment was given during 4 weeks, 2 times per week.  After treatment new radiographic measures were taken to determine biomechanical changes. Results A 64.3% of subjects had lumbar facet tropism, all evaluated with radiographs.  After chiropractic  treatment a significant change (p ≤ 0.05) was observed on LS measurement.  Changes in all patients with facet tropism were observed (41.3 ± 6.0 - 43.5 ± 6.0 p ≤ 0.02). Conclusion Chiropractic therapy modify measurements of LS, on patients with facet tropism at lumbar spine.  This type of treatment has a positive impact on lumbar biomechanical dysfunctions.

Abstract:

Posture is a biomechanical state that relates with osseous, muscle and nervous system,  also regulated weight distribution on lower extremities, contributing to an adequate corporal alignment and proprioception. Incorrect posture behaviors provokes malfunction of these three systems. We previously reported that chiropractic manipulation (CM) with Diversified technique, improves posture (biomechanical stability) in distance college runners. We analyzed postural changes before and after of CM on asymptomatic college students. A 65 asymptomatic college students (UNEVE) were selected.  Two images were taken and analyzed per student, before and after of CM using Posture Screen Software mobile version 1.3.9 (Posture Co, Inc.).  Vertical line (AP) and lateral line (LL) from areas cervical, dorsal, lumbar, knees, as well as, weight were analyzed. To determine displacement differences for AP and LL regarding ideal lines, we established negative (-) values to AP when located towards patient left side and to LL when located forward to the patient. CM treatment consisted in two adjustments per week, during a 2-month period with Diversified technique. For AP significant differences (p<0.05) at cervical region during adjustments 6-10 and 14-16 were observed.  For dorsal and lumbar areas, we observed significant differences during adjustments 2-16.  Considering weight, we only observed significant differences during adjustments 5-10-15.  For LL images significant differences (p<0.05) were obtained in cervical region during adjustments 1-5 and 9-12, dorsal area from 3-16, lumbar region at 4-7 and knees in adjustments 6-7. Our results show, CM treatment, lead AP and LL to shift towards ideal posture values and redistributes loads (weight) in both lower extremities. Treatment helped postural alignment and improves biomechanical stability in students.

Abstract:

Introduction: Several researches has been conducted to correlate and analyze cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine in a sagittal plane. Many cervical pain etiologies have been described with incidence increase of 15% over general population, and diverse biomechanical factors over spine curves alterations has been pointed out. Objective: Analyze and correlates cervical spine biomechanical alterations in asymptomatic college runners. Materials and Methods: A group of 65 asymptomatic college runners with cervical and lumbar spine biomechanical alterations participated. Biomechanical alterations were measured and diagnosed by radiography using a specialized software. Results: Correlations with significant changes (p < 0.05) and positive slopes were observed for some cervical spine radiographic measurements: Cervical Spine Angle, Deep Measurement, Atlas Angle. Positive and significant relationships were observed among the fallowing radiographic measurements: Hypolordotic Cervical Angle and Atlas Extension Angle 87.8% (p = 0.00), Hypolordotic Cervical Angle and Hypolordotic Deep Measurement 83.7% (p = 0.00). Conclusions: Biomechanical alterations of Hypolordotic Cervical Angle were positively correlated with Atlas Extension Angle and Hypolordotic Deep Measurement. Our study demonstrates biomechanical alterations of C1 directly affects Cervical Lordotic Angle.

Cancer - Ayurveda Treatment; In this special topic we will deal with cancer with special reference to Rasayana. Rasayana drugs effect direct enrichment of the nutritional quality of Rasa (the nutrient plasma) which are directly added to the pool of nutrition and in turn help in improved tissue nourishment.The art of medicine was born with the birth of first man. It had to be human body was subjected to the Strife, internal as well as external, right from the beginning ‘Avoid Pain’ have been one of the earliest pre occupations of the man kind. All the nature  is subject to continuous modification. Nothing stands still. The cycles of creation, sustenance and then destruction go on as per the nature's clock.

Human body is a miracle of the nature. Body is a self-maintaining, regulating, correcting wonder machine of nature. Only when some of our organs are abused due to our own folly, the disease gets a foothold. Violation of natural laws of the health is responsible for more than 90% of the diseases.

The Ayurvedic Canvas, vast as it was, gave preeminence to the stream of interactions between the world within and without the human body. The homology of the five elements in medication on the one hand and in the body constituents on the other, has profound implications in the

practice of medicine.
